WRITING YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
• This assignment must be completed individually.
• All courses of study must use the Harvard referencing system for written assessments, apart from LLB/LLM courses where OSCOLA should be applied. Please see the below link for guidance: https://library.aru.ac.uk/referencing/referencing.htm
• Your work must indicate the number of words you have used. Written assignments must not exceed the specified maximum number of words. When a written assignment is marked, the excessive use of words beyond the word limit is reflected in the academic judgement of the piece of work which results in a lower mark being awarded for the piece of work (regulation 6.74).
• Assignment submissions are to be made anonymously. Do not write your name anywhere on your work.
• Write your student ID number at the top of every page.
• Where the assignment comprises more than one task, all tasks must be submitted in a single document.
• You must number all pages.
SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
• In order to achieve full marks, you must submit your work before the deadline. Work that is submitted late – if your work is submitted on the same day as the deadline by midnight, your mark will receive a 10% penalty. If you submit your work up to TWO working days after the published submission deadline – it will be accepted and marked. However, the element of the module’s assessment to which the work contributes will be capped with a maximum mark of 40%.
• Work cannot be submitted if the period of 2 working days after the deadline has passed (unless there is an approved extension). Failure to submit within the relevant period will mean that you have failed the assessment.
• Requests for short-term extensions will only be considered in the case of illness or other cause considered valid by the Director of Studies Team. Please contact [email protected]. A request must normally be received and agreed by the Director of Studies Team in writing at least 24 hours prior to the deadline. ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
For this assignment, you are required to individually produce and submit a professionally presented management report of 2,500 words about your selected organisation’s operations, addressing both Tasks 1 and 2 below.
Select a company whose business operations you are very familiar with and that you can easily provide real examples for. Select one organisation from any of the below industries:
• Hospitality e.g. Hotels, Restaurants, Transportation, Events etc
• Retail e.g. High-Street, Online, Supermarkets, Barbers etc
• Manufacturing e.g. Automotive, Construction, Fashion, Food,
• Services e.g. Professional, Financial, Entertainment, Payments,
TASK 1
Imagine you are a new management intern at the operations department in your selected organisation and your line manager has just asked you to produce a management report to help you understand the business operations at this organisation. In your report you must discuss the four operations theories / frameworks AND also apply them to your selected organisation by providing real examples / images.
1. The Input-Transformation-Output framework of operations with all its components at your organisation
2.The 4 Vs Typology of Operations: Volume, Variety, Variation, Visibility and their implications on your selected organisation
3. The 5 Operations Performance Objectives: Quality, Speed, Dependability, Flexibility, Cost for Operations
4. Order-winners and order-qualifiers at your organisation
TASK 2.
You are required to provide 2 real industry recommendations to improve the score on any 2 Performance Objectives of Quality, Speed, Dependability, Flexibility and Cost.
These two recommendations must be real and will need to be justified for your organisation so as to benefit the business operations and their customers.
Thus, within your report, you should discuss relevant theoretical concepts and frameworks, and also apply them to your selected organisation.
This will show you understand the role of the operations function in creating a competitive advantage in modern organisations with a strategic approach (LO1). The report will also show an understanding of contemporary operations problems and current techniques to solve contemporary organisational challenges (LO3). The content will also show that you developed practical problem-solving skills and decision making techniques within industry as a framework for a career pathway in operations management. (LO4).
The suggested standard report format should include the following sections:
• A cover page
• An executive summary – 1 page, with brief overview of report content.
• A contents page – 1 page, with all relevant sections and sub-sections
• An introduction – about the selected organisation
• Findings section – as main body with subsections
• A conclusion section – as overall conclusion
• Recommendations – in relation to company
• A reference list – minimum of 8 academic sources in Harvard system.
• Appendices – optional.
